Massive tuna has date with record books
It hasn't been certified as a N.C. record yet, but a mind-boggling bluefin tuna was caught Sunday off Morehead City. The fish weighed 845 pounds and measured 110 inches.
It was taken by Pennsylvania angler Dennis Meinhart
, who was trolling with a party aboard the Sea Wolf, a Maryland-based boat. The state record is a 744-pounder.
Capt. Marston Jones, Mate Jon Meade
The mate John Meades report.
Nothing too crazy about the whole day really. Everything went as rehearsed....besides some serious endurance, work, exertion, and a little pee in a boot. Angler Dennis Meinhart had just finished battling a 400lb class fish 20 minutes prior when we had the big bite. The 130lb reel was dumped way below the backing until we backed down and gained some line back. Then the tug of war ensued. About two hours into it the fish rolled 150 feet behind the boat and thats when we really understood the fish's size. Dennis remarked that he thought he saw "another fish behind it" when Captain Marston Jones explained that "it was just the big fish's tail stretched out behind". Exciting to say the least! Couldn't get it to budge so the drag slowly went up. Until game over - mate Jon Meade (myself) hit it with the flyer. We had to get assistance getting the thing through our tuna door and a big thanks to the guys that jumped aboard to help pull!
