These fish will generally spook away from the boat if you are anchored up to 100'. this applies to herring as well. once you are set up and quiet for at least 30 min., you will notice fish moving under the boat, or just off to the side of the boat. If you are doing all that and you only mark if you are on the move, the fish are also on the move. try to anchor ahead of the fish in a similar depth of water and see if you can pick them off. If not, they are in spawn mode, not feeding. The closer to 58 degrees the water gets, the more you have to wait them out to get a few biters.

Sounds like sage advice, thanks. Do you mean 100' of depth?

I'm slow, but I came back to say that, duh, you must have meant 100' from the boat.

Thanks!

Went out for a few hours this morning. Bait continued to be a struggle, but I was able to get 4. Two pop-offs, some run and drops and a 37". The quick RnDs killed my bait. Unfortunately I don't have luck when fishing chunk so it shortened the length of my trip. Back out Saturday evening.

Getting bait just sucks. Was able to get 6 herring with a shitload of time and work and turn it into 6 fish on the last 2 hours of outgoing. The biggest was 38" and two were 37.5". If you get bait, you'll catch fish.

In the past two days of fishing I've seen exactly ONE herring - and it wanted nothing to do with my net. This is getting to be VERY frustrating.

We were headed to Newburgh yesterday but due to boat issues we decided to fish local in Castleton yesterday eve into this morning. We went up to Albany for bait which was tough but we managed 5 herring. Had a few runs with the suspended live on a bobber but no hookups. A Friend next to us nailed a 40" and 37" fish around 2am...on tail chunk. He is in the Tourney but new that by the time of weigh in that 40" fish would not be legal because they really do shrink so it was released. We will be heading for Newburgh in the am with 10 dozen bloods.

Fished Albany area above the Corning preserve. Herring everywhere. No stripers though. I didn't see any others boat one either and there were plenty of boats out there today.

More herring = more choices.
