...and I made these.... They just make it easier to pull them out and use them without dealing with the hooks, since they reel into the PVC. It makes the short jigs a little easier because its stiff. I only found them at one bait shop but they were $80 a piece so I made a couple for $30.

That's brilliant...how did you attach them to the rod?

The PVC poles ARE the rod. The reels are attached with hose clamps. The line enters the tube about 4 inches in front of the reel through a hole.

I made one too, works good but heavy, found some sabiki rods for around 50$, well worth the money

There is a YouTube video of a guy making one.

It is heavy but I never cast with it, and never need to jig for long. Also I wanted something cheap so I can leave it in my boat throughout the season and not worry about it being stolen. I keep the boat in a lot so it would be easy to take. I l also wanted one less thing to put in the jeep when I am done, and it is one less pole to break down.

I use an ultralight trout rod for jigging herring because i like feeling them bite and fighting them, but I was considering getting or making a sabiki rod to deal with the hooks. How sensitive are they? I'm assuming you can't feel subtle hits and too strong to really have a fight with the fish?

I can feel them hit. I feel one, two, then three or more then I pull them up. It's not like fighting with a flexible rod though. Also I lose more of them than I probably would on a flexy rod.

Maybe one of the Mods can put up a new thread for 2017 Herring reports as they have entered the mouth of the Hudson this week.
