Whatever the case, I'll be out there with bloodworms this week.
90% of the NB Bay fish are males waiting for the females to come back down from up north to spawn. We did filet 3 fish the other day and they all had crushed clam and crab shells in their stomachs which they undoubtedly got at the mouth of the river before their journey. There is not much food in the Bay at all which explains why the fishing is so good. They are hungry.

While I was pulling the boat out over in Wappinger, there was a guy on the dock with a bucket full of herring he just pulled out of the creek. He told me he's been hitting them the past few nights on both chunk and whole herring.

I wonder if they only feed on them near the shallows and in the evening.

Yes...there is a contingency of larger fish that hang out on the bottom and do not school....they will come up to the creek mouths and feed.

I go to Shu fly in Nanuet near my place. They are pretty good about keeping a supply on hand. They give a mix of sizes in each dozen and have been nice and fresh this spring.

It would be nice to find one close to Newburgh though.

I usually go to Vinny's in Wappingers. Earlier he had nice worms that were huge (and usually does). Tuesday's shipment did not look healthy at all. Some of them already had swollen heads and bleached bodies.

Has anyone been able to find bloods this week? Two stores in Rockland are out with no shipments coming in.
