Fished Newburgh Bay all day 5/1 one schoolie 19" went out that night screen was blank all night. 5/2 Had to use my leftover bloods at a $1.00 a pop so headed out around 10am to continued blank screens. started to mark fish around 2pm north of Little Stony PT. But by that time I was done.

When I was out in Newburgh on Friday there were pockets of fish. I had to move around a lot to find them and they moved around as well. Nothing like what I've seen in past years so I assume they are still coming in.

Fished from Coxsackie to Catskill 10-130 and 4-8pm today. Marked huuuuuge schools in the am. Had one hookup all day on a big one around 5 but got cut off on a rock. Didnt see or hear of anyone catching anything. So it goes. Back out at sunrise.

Just got off the water in Newburgh.......wind was blowing us west to east which made fishing hard but when it calmed down at dusk the fishfinder lit up with schools and we got 10 in the 25-32 in range. The schools dispersed around midnight.

Once again I have proven that the Newburgh striper have no interest in herring..........last night we put out a herring and every pole with a worm got fish and nothing on the herring pole all night.

DocZ,

New to the game. If you could answer me this 1 question. How do you decide where to fish right now. I see you have been in both Newburgh and Marlboro recently what do you look for specifically on the fishfinder. Thanks in advance

I watch the weather and wherever it is better I will go. I also talk to friends who fish both areas for reports. Albany has short season which is usually only into the first week or 2 of May so I try to hit some of the bigger ones up here early season. I also check the water clarity........rain rarely affects the water in Newburgh because the river is a mile wide down there.

Basically..........if I want large numbers of striper I go to Newburgh...if I wanna only catch a few fish with the potential of 40+ inches I go to Albany.

DocZ,

When you go down to Newburgh do you patrol around awhile looking for fish or do you have your spots where you know they are holed up?

Thanks for sharing. And I know I said just 1 ?

Put in at catskill today from 5-noon. Wasn't able to scap a single herring. My buddy with a gillnet gave me 6 but they got killed off by cats. One run and drop. Screens were pretty blank.

Both but I have areas that I know they always are. Generally the east side of the channel in 38-40 fow is where they are....suspended at 15-20ft.

Fished from 9:30 to roughly 1 around Albany. Managed to jig one herring. Swam it for a while but it wound up as chunk bait. The very last piece became lunch for a 30" striper. Not great but not skunked either. I was able to jig herring pretty easy on my way back to the launch. Sun poked out a bit which makes a big difference. Hopefully this impending rain will be a slow soaker and not a mud maker.

Put in at Albany, went up to Troy, got bait at the creekmouth. Tried the Dam, above the I-90 bridge, above the port, nothing except a big green eel at the Dam on a chunk. Even the cats weren't biting. Marked tons on the ff. Clarity about a foot. Gonna take up golf, eventually you get the little ball in the hole.

Got out at 1 today and fished until 6. Started in Newburgh then spent some time around Whites. The river was choppy and windy. Managed 3 small ones. Worms didn't last long being drug through the river like that. Maybe the weather will cut us a break next week.

Tried a few shore areas briefly in the Albany area...both sides of river. Visibility was maybe 10" at best. Just for gits and shiggles I threw a pencil, a spook, and a bucktail near some current breaks. I thought maybe a bass might home in on the popper and pencil's commotion. Cloudy day...water well into the 50s...herring around...dropping tide...hey, you never know...
Talked with one shore guy that seemed to have no trouble scrapping herring...and he got a small bass too.
