I will say it again...........5-8 lbs of drag should NEVER break a hook....yes...drag is your friend and I've landed over 35 fish last year over 50lbs without any issues using Trokar Hooks but broke many other brands. What part of my vice test don't you get.........the older Gamagatsu's bend and the new ones snap ?? It is pretty well known that the cheap Jap/Chinese companies are now mass producing hooks and the cooling process is performed too quickly making them briddle.

We hit the water in Newburgh from early Wed am and came off tonight with 22 stripers total. Overall the bite is down as there has been a thick school at the NB Bridge for 4 days now that has not been aggressively feeding which they should by now. Every evening they form there for a few hours. Each day I checked Marlboro and aside form some very large marks on the sonar the volume of fish is way down there. The morning bite has also not been very good. All of our fish were lat last 1/3 of Ebb and Flood tides. We ended up south of Pollipel Island and did pretty well there yesterday in the heat. Today the fish were scattered throughout the Bay and we picked at em in 38 ft of water. Our biggest was 35"/19 lbs female still with eggs. The spawning is just getting started down there and has NOT ended.......don't worry. Marlboro temps were 55-56 degrees. Newburgh channel temps were 58 degrees but in the shallow water off Dennings and South of the Island it was up to 62 degrees. Thurs night from midnight to 6:30 am I drifted from Dennings point all the way to the Rock Plant in Marlboro without a single nibble and marked hardly any fish. I also again tried herring and not a nibble on that pole.

Definitely not the only one ...... i have a grand total of 2 this year and that is definitely the norm up this way this year. I typically break the 40 fish mark each year before i get burned out and move on to trout on thompsons lake.

I'm sure the issue is weather related. Even in the best of seasons my experience is that an inch of rain shuts the fishery down until the river clears and the flow slows which is typically a week or so. This year another inch of rain has fallen before conditions returned to normal and the flow has never really slowed even when the water clears up.

It's happened before that the bulk of the season was lost to poor conditions and it sucks but that's mother nature.

Two straight horrible ice fishing seasons as well.

I was out from 2-8pm. Whites down to NB. Hit one 28" around 4:30 and then nothing. It was hard to find fish and I didn't see any large schools.

I commend Doc Z for his excellent detailed posts his willingness to help he must be wearing a headset as he's always on the radio .I agree most of my fish have been caught at ebb low ,slack or near high ,the largest was on the west shore of Whites 44 inch female but that was the only fish caught there . Most days have been small dinks with one or two teen fish mixed in and a few 20LB plus but overall slow as fishing conditions certainly haven't helped [wind].Logging fish for the Hudson River Cooperative /DEC .Its unusual to drift without seeing a single fish .It will be interesting to see how the next few weeks turnout I have only a few days left before heading to the salt .

I have been out ~13 times, only landed a half dozen fish. Mostly smaller ones. Fishing schodack up to albany. Past 2 days have been plenty of herring but no fish, not even any runs. Hoping it will pick up some now that the water temp is finally up.

Any reports from Albany or Newburgh today? Contemplating on doing my first Newburgh trip tomorrow, or switching to largemouth.

Newburgh is loaded East side from the steel to Dennings, and bigger fish are hitting hard. Boated over 20 with 10 fish 30"-36" Friday 12:30 to 4pm.

Thank you for the report.
Were the bulk of your fish caught on bloods or herring?

Just want to be prepared.

Post Re: 2017 STRIPER REPORTs

Had a great daddy-daughter day today in Marlboro...first time in over 10 years I got my 19 year old daughter to fish with me, we fished from 3 - 7pm....incoming tide....she got 8, I got 3. She got the big girl of the day, a 36", 18lb female. Got some dinks and a bunch from 24" - 30"...all on bloods, all released. An early father's day present for me!
