Doc. Must be different out there on boat. Late in season we use fresh chunk herring from shore in Cornwall with success. Could be something with the shallow water and behavior. But I do know a couple years ago on a boat, live or chunk herring had a 0% rate at the same time they were slamming bloods in the area

Landed 2 and lost another on Monday about a mile north of the Kingston bridge. 30" 11lb and a 38" 21lb. Both on 1" wide chunks. Not bad from shore for only being there an hour and a half.

Fished Albany Thursday night into Friday with no luck. Marked fish but no bite. Then went to Marlboro Fri night and got a nice 37"/23lb fat female. Buzzed down to Newburgh Bay Sat am and saw the worst conditions in the river I have ever seen....4-5 ft whitecaps and sustained 20-25 mph winds. Thank God for my 9.5 ft beam heavy Grady because we roughed it out..picked a few fish here and there but marked lots of schools. Once the wind died and waves flattened the bite turned on and we ended up with 21 fish up to 33". Then a nasty thunderstorm chased us out. Water temp Albany 54 and Marlboro/Newburgh 56.

We fished Marlboro today. This cold front has caused the fish to have lockjaw. We again marked plenty of fish but they were all on the bottom and we only managed 3 for the day. First time ever I put a line down at 55 feet and actually got a Striper...that's a first for Marlboro for me. Back out tomorrow am.

I finally got the boat out today for the first time this season after greasing the trailer bearings, readjusting drum brakes, bleeding brakes, charging battery and pumping tires.

No fish [in the boat] to report, but lots of nice marks were easy to find in normal spots in Newburgh. I only got out about 4:30-7:00pm, and they must have been full of bloodworms from the fleet earlier in the day. Temp was 56.9F at the surface. I had lines at 14', 18', and bottom, drifting past hundreds of stripers. The tackle shop had good sized worms today, some at 3/8"x8". We were blown against the tide the whole afternoon. Anyone find them hungry?

Will be back out next weekend at least once for a good full day trip. They won't hold out next time!

This Cold front has them hunkered down on the bottom where they won't feed as much.............as soon as it warms or we get a sunny day they will be on fire and hungry.

Oops, looks like I was still writing when you posted about the lock jaw. I'm sure the cold rain doesn't help warm things up.

DocZ

Just wanted to say thanks for the advice last week. Went out Friday with some new found confidence and had an unbelievable day 12 fish, largest 32in 23lbs. best day I have ever had on river by far. Went out on Sat and arrived just as you were calling it, around noon. I turned back shortly after. My handle of ch 68 is Cisco if you ever need anything.

Sun turns on the bite and that's what it did today...the schools came together and are becoming more active as the water temp rises. It was up to 58 degrees in Marlboro/Newburgh and we ended up with 13 fish for the day. Biggest was 30 inches. One day of work tomorrow then back out.

Fished above Albany from 4-7:30. 4 fish between 27 and 31". 2 were on live and 2 were on chunk. Herring was no problem despite the gloomy skies. Only saw two other boats pass by. Water was a chilly 51.
