Default Trolling Questions

I have been out several times this season with no luck. Was thinking about trying to troll and was curious as to what others thought about it. I usually launch anywhere from henry hudson park to troy. My questions would be: Troll the main channel or the flats around it? Try to troll near the bottom or where i am marking fish? Does anyone have any favorite lures for trolling that they might suggest? Or do i just suck and need to keep at it with the herring? LOL Any suggestions would be great!

Early trolling was the way to go due to the herring being few n far between in the Troy area. Now that the herring are here and so are the boats trolling might not be my first choice. Try drifting, you cover ground and it presents the bait as natural as possible. If what you are doing isn't producing watch others n copy , anchored, drifting, chunk , whole live herring or trolling good luck and keep trying new things.

you don't suck ......... you just need to put your time in and learn the ropes

it's like i tell the old guys who haven't played baseball in 15 years and start playing again ....... it's not easy

took me 4 or 5 years to really get the hang of it

I have been trolling most of the year bad have been very successful. The lures you use depends on the type of trolling your doing. I like bombers and big macks if you can find them. I also troll live herriing off downriggersvand dipsey divers. speed plays a big role in trolling. As far depth is concerned try different depths and see what works

What speed is ideal for drifting. One day when all else had failed I tried drifting. With an outgoing tide and after rain I was drifting at 3.5 mph. It seamed way to fast. I don't think my drift socks would have slowed me down enough.

It is difficult to drift at a cerian speed.all we use to do is drift untill we started trolling. We. do still drift if trollin does not work. Drifting is now my 2nd option and trollin 1st. I do not like fishing on anchor. Like to cover ground an keep moving. I think as long as your moving u should be fine. Its tough to drift with a south wind an incomming tide. If u hAve a trollin motor u can use that to control ur speed an direction. Some use 2 drift socks. Its all trial an error. Hope this helps
