I use them on the reefs off watch hill , block, and montauk at slack tide in the summer. easier than wire cause they are not way behind the boat, easy to get around lobster pots and boats. using a downrigger keeping the ball 10-15 feet off the bottom.
One of my favorites is a 6 arm with spoons on the inside and 6" action plastics chartreuse/bluish green. Use 50lbs line, it's a heavy rig usually drops about 10 feet per 20ft out. only run about 20ft behind the ball. They can't resist this when they are laying low.

I have been fishing unbrella rigs for many years here in ny,but i use wire (monel) lineso i can get down 20 and 30 ft. mostly use tubes of white, black or red and catch tons of fish. i use 18in 4arm with one in the middle. all have 10'o hooks. i dont catch a lot of keeper(28in) bass but works great on bluefish too. if you want to catch the big bass, go with the bunker spoon. great bait good luck ED

Been fishing 9er rigs for 3 years now. 6 inch black shads have been killer off IBSP.

A question for those with experience.... Can you pull umbrella rigs on 25# mono or is it too light? Or can I pull planer boards on braided? I have heard that it slips but not sure if that's true. Thanks in advance....

I switched over my umbrella rig rods to 150lb braided. Since Lake Lanier is full of trees it has greatly reduced the number of rigs lost. When I now catch a tree, I just tie the line to a cleat and it breaks the 50lb wire jig leader saving the $39 rig.

Plainer boards I use 20 mono line. It holds well in the snap even when I run swim baits at 2.5 mph.

Regards,
