The preferred method of fishing for stripers
around Long island and on the charter boats in Montauk is trolling
with jigs, long tubes or umbrella rigs. Each of these lures is customized
to work best for the style.
While trolling is the most productive, they also fish for stripers
while chunking, diamond jigging, with bucktails and other light tackle
methods.
Shore fishermen use eels, pogies, (bunker)
clam bellies, lobster, crabs and top water plugs in the cooler weather.
ORIENT POINT
Large stripers in The Race.
One of Long Island's premier locations for striped bass is east of Valiant Rock in The Race. Off the tip of the North Fork of Long Island are three water passageways for fish to traverse: Plum Gut, The Sluiceway and The Race. Its fast-moving water and uneven bottom make it a favorite hangout for bass, and anglers have been taking advantage of the geology for generations. Party boats have been limiting out after just a few passess in the race drifting bucktails.
